We are right in the thick of baseball season. The perfect time of the year for grilling and rooting for your home team. One of my fondest memories in my teens is having a Dulce de Leche A&W® Root Beer floats with my Mom while watching baseball. They were a great compliment to whatever we were grilling during the game. A&W is celebrating its 100th anniversary and I wanted to recreate my favorite #AWMemories with my wife, who never had the chance to experience one of those yum floats during the game. A&W Root Beer basted burgers is what I was craving to have with my dulce de leche floats.
After making a list of my ingredients, I headed down to Walmart in Burbank. It’s the perfect one stop shop for everything I needed to complete my meal.
First lets make the BBQ sauce. Here’s what you need
1 cup A&W Root Beer
1 cup of ketchup
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
¼ Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup packed light brown sugar
¼ teaspoon of kosher salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan add olive oil and set over medium-low heat, then add the minced garlic and sauté, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes until golden brown.
Stir in the A&W Root Beer, ketchup, worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce it to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, for 6 to 8 minutes until the sauce has reduced by 1/4. Remove from heat and stir in salt and pepper to taste. This can easily be stored in the fridge and used for a week or so.
Now for the burgers! Here’s what you need.
1 pound of ground sirloin
1 egg
¼ cup of A&W Root Beer
1 teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
Preheat your grill until it reaches about 400 degrees. In a bowl, mix together the egg, ¼ cup of A&W Root Beer, salt, and pepper.. Mix in the ground beef. Form into 2 patties. Grill burgers, brushing with the A&W Root Beer bbq sauce you made earlier during grilling. Grill for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they are cooked as you like them. Add sharp cheddar cheese after you flip the burgers the first time. Serve with sliced tomato on a brioche bun.
Now it’s time for the dulce de leche floats! Get your favorite dulce de leche ice cream and put two large scoops of it into a glass cup. Pour in your A&W Root Beer and you are ready to scarf down your delicious burger!
